ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) convoy led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi entered Peshawar on Thursday as the party’s long march continued for a fifth consecutive day, demanding the release of imprisoned party founder Imran Khan.
The march began in Lakki Marwat on October 4 and subsequently passed through Kohat, Mattani and Khyber. Although PTI initially planned to advance towards Islamabad, the route and final destination remain uncertain.
Addressing supporters, Afridi urged participants to remain committed to their struggle, saying their difficulties could not compare with Imran Khan’s imprisonment. He indicated that the party would announce its next strategy after reaching Swabi.
Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan called for reviewing Pakistan’s counterterrorism policy and demanded the recovery of two party members allegedly abducted by unidentified individuals. He rejected suggestions of imposing governor’s rule in the province, advocating dialogue and constitutional solutions instead.
Mobile internet and cellular services were reportedly suspended in several parts of Peshawar as a security precaution. Some private schools also closed temporarily, prompting the regulatory authority to direct institutions to maintain regular academic activities.
Separately, the Peshawar High Court sought Afridi’s response to a contempt petition alleging that he used a government helicopter to participate in the march, potentially violating an earlier court order prohibiting public resources for political activities.
