PTI founder Imran Khan’s health is reported to be stable, said Barrister Salman Safdar after meeting the jailed leader. The meeting took place at Central Jail Rawalpindi, commonly known as Adiala jail, and lasted for three hours.
Barrister Safdar was granted permission by the Supreme Court to meet Khan. The court declared the lawyer a “friend of the court,” allowing full access to the PTI founder. The move ensures an independent assessment of Khan’s living conditions.
The Supreme Court directed Barrister Safdar to submit a written report on Khan’s jail conditions. The report is expected to be submitted by Wednesday, following today’s meeting.
Speaking to journalists outside the jail, Barrister Safdar confirmed he received full access to the PTI founder. He added that he will refrain from making any statements until the report is formally submitted to the Supreme Court.
The court emphasized the importance of reviewing Khan’s living conditions. Authorities were instructed to facilitate the lawyer’s access to the barracks to ensure an accurate report.
This development followed a request from PTI senior leader Latif Khosa seeking a meeting with the incarcerated former prime minister. The Supreme Court, however, had earlier rejected an immediate meeting request, noting that prior notice to the government is necessary.
Khan was briefly shifted from Adiala jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for a minor eye procedure weeks ago. The PTI alleges that Khan’s rights as a prisoner have been repeatedly violated, and family members were not informed about medical procedures in some instances.
The party submitted a two-page memorandum to the Supreme Court registrar last week. It requested immediate visitation rights for Khan, including access for family, doctors, lawyers, and friends. The memorandum highlighted concerns over the alleged secretive medical procedures at a hospital in Islamabad.
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023. He faces multiple cases, ranging from corruption to terrorism, following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
The three-hour meeting at Adiala jail is expected to provide the Supreme Court with a clear assessment of Khan’s current health and living conditions. The report will determine whether additional measures are required to ensure his well-being.
In conclusion, Barrister Safdar’s assessment reinforces the judiciary’s oversight over high-profile prisoners. The Supreme Court will now review the submitted report to take further steps regarding Khan’s rights and health monitoring.
