President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Andy Burnham after he assumed office as the United Kingdom’s prime minister. Both leaders also expressed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-UK cooperation.
Burnham became Britain’s new prime minister after King Charles III formally appointed him following Keir Starmer’s resignation. Consequently, Pakistan’s leadership conveyed its best wishes to the incoming British leader.
President Zardari Calls For Stronger Bilateral Cooperation
According to a statement from the President’s Office, Zardari hoped Pakistan and the United Kingdom would deepen their longstanding partnership. He also expressed confidence that cooperation would expand across areas of mutual interest.
Furthermore, the president reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He noted that Pakistan has supported regional peace efforts during recent tensions in the Gulf region.
Zardari also expressed hope that the new UK government would help secure an end to ongoing hostilities. Additionally, he said Britain could contribute to restoring the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The president wished Burnham success in his new responsibilities. Moreover, he said he looked forward to working together to strengthen bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated Burnham in a post on X. He wished the British leader success and expressed hope for closer cooperation.
Shehbaz said Pakistan and the United Kingdom share historic and deep-rooted ties. He added that millions of British Pakistanis continue to strengthen relations between both countries.
Furthermore, the prime minister highlighted the importance of expanding bilateral trade and investment. He said both governments should work together to elevate economic cooperation to new heights.
