President Asif Ali Zardari received the credentials of the ambassadors-designate of Italy and the Republic of Korea on Wednesday.
The meetings took place at Aiwan-e-Sadr. Ambassador-designate of Italy Ugo Ciarlatani and Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Korea Han Sungho presented their credentials.
The president discussed opportunities to strengthen Pakistan’s relations with both countries. Trade, investment, technology and economic cooperation remained key areas during the meetings.
Pakistan Seeks Stronger Ties With Italy
During his meeting with Ambassador Ugo Ciarlatani, President Zardari expressed confidence in his tenure. He hoped the ambassador would contribute to stronger Pakistan-Italy relations.
The president noted the steady growth in bilateral ties between the two countries. In particular, he highlighted progress in trade and investment.
Bilateral trade between Pakistan and Italy has surpassed $1 billion. The president also welcomed the agreement abolishing visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders.
Zardari appreciated Italy’s support for Pakistan’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Pakistan held the seat for the 2025-26 term.
He also highlighted the role of the Pakistani community in Italy. The president described the community as an important bridge between the two countries.
Pakistan and Korea Eye Wider Economic Cooperation
During his meeting with Ambassador Han Sungho, President Zardari highlighted Pakistan’s importance for its relationship with the Republic of Korea.
He expressed Pakistan’s desire to expand trade and investment ties with South Korea. The president also noted ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Both countries are also cooperating in several other areas. These include climate change, development and defence.
Zardari expressed hope that cooperation would continue to expand across several sectors. He particularly highlighted shipbuilding, technology and economic development.
The discussions reflected Pakistan’s interest in strengthening practical cooperation with South Korea. At the same time, ongoing negotiations could provide further opportunities for economic engagement.
Focus on Trade, Technology and Investment
The meetings with the two ambassadors highlighted Pakistan’s broader focus on strengthening international economic partnerships.
With Italy, the president pointed to growing trade and investment ties. He also welcomed progress on diplomatic travel arrangements.
With South Korea, discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation. Shipbuilding, technology and development were among the areas identified for continued collaboration.
The president also emphasised the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations with both countries.
Senator Saleem Mandviwalla and Secretary Foreign Affairs were also present during the meetings.
The ambassadors’ credential presentations mark the beginning of their diplomatic engagements in Pakistan. Meanwhile, the discussions highlighted opportunities for further cooperation in trade, investment, technology and other areas.
