ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the award of Sitara-e-Shujaat for Liaqat Shaheed, the civilian who sacrificed his life while attempting to stop a suicide bomber near Kohat, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to an official statement, the president granted approval on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in recognition of Liaqat Shaheedโs extraordinary bravery and national sacrifice.
President Zardari praised the slain civilian for preventing what could have become a major tragedy. He stated that Liaqat demonstrated exceptional courage and responsibility by confronting the attacker despite the grave danger involved.
Moreover, the president described the martyrโs actions as an inspiring example of patriotism and selflessness for the entire nation.
Bravery Prevented Larger Tragedy
Security officials said the incident occurred in the inter-provincial region between Punjabโs Jand tehsil and Khyber Pakhtunkhwaโs Khushal Garh Bridge. According to reports, the suspected attacker, allegedly linked to Fitna al-Khawarij, was moving through nearby fields before Liaqat intercepted him.
Authorities stated that Liaqat, a retired Pakistan Railways employee and local resident, stopped the suspect and demanded identification. However, the militant detonated explosives during the confrontation, resulting in Liaqatโs martyrdom and the attackerโs death.
Furthermore, officials said the civilianโs courageous action likely prevented significant casualties and damage in the surrounding area.
Nation Pays Tribute to Sacrifice
President Zardari emphasized that the nation honors the courage and sacrifice shown by Liaqat Shaheed in the face of imminent danger. He added that such acts of bravery strengthen national resolve against terrorism and violence.
Meanwhile, citizens and officials across the country also praised the martyr for placing public safety above his own life.
The award of Sitara-e-Shujaat recognizes exceptional courage displayed by civilians and military personnel in service to the nation.
