Pope Leo XIV has played down any quarrel with US President Donald Trump. The pontiff made it clear that he does not want to get into a public debate with the American leader.
Speaking to reporters on his flight to Angola on Saturday, the Pope said some reports about his recent comments during the Africa tour were not fully accurate. He explained that his strong speech in Cameroon two days earlier was written well in advance.
Pope clarifies timing of his peace message.
Pope Leo told journalists that the remarks about the world being ravaged by tyrants had nothing to do with Trump. He prepared the speech two weeks before Trump criticized him on social media. Trump had called the Pope weak on crime and bad on foreign policy. He even posted an AI-generated image of himself that drew heavy criticism.
Leo focuses on peace instead of politics.
โAs it happens, it was looked at as if I was trying to debate the president, which is not in my interest at all,โ the Pope said clearly. He wants to promote a message of peace and unity rather than get involved in political arguments.
This Africa tour is one of the most demanding ever for a Pope. It covers 11 cities across four countries with many long flights. Leo has taken a more direct and forceful tone on this journey compared to his earlier months as pontiff.
Many observers note the tension between the two leaders over the US-Israeli actions in the Middle East. Still, the Pope prefers to stay focused on his spiritual message. He continues his busy schedule across Africa while keeping the door open for calm dialogue.
