US emphasizes Pakistan’s institutions to cooperate in the electoral process

Elizabeth Horst, the lead US diplomat for South and Central Asian affairs, emphasized the importance of Pakistani institutions working collaboratively through the electoral process in consultation with political parties to ensure free and fair elections. She expressed the view that Pakistani people should decide the country’s future through the electoral process.

Ms. Horst stressed the desire to see the electoral process advance in a way that encourages broad participation. She noted that the United States primarily supports the democratic process of free and fair elections according to Pakistan’s constitution.

Regarding human rights, Ms. Horst highlighted that respect for human rights is a significant aspect of US assistance to Pakistan. It encompasses development assistance programs as well as security and law enforcement cooperation. US officials regularly raise human rights concerns with their Pakistani counterparts.

Ambassador Blome has raised these concerns during discussions with caretaker government officials, including Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar. The United States commits to raising issues related to restrictions on free speech, press freedom, threats to journalists and their families, censorship, freedom of movement, defamation, and blasphemy laws, as well as the use of local laws to suppress independent media in discussions with Pakistani authorities.

Importance of Independent Media and Democracy

Ms. Horst emphasized the importance of free and independent media in a democratic society. She pointed out that these issues are also subjects of regular discussion in bilateral meetings with Pakistani officials.

In response to the perception that the US played a role in bringing down Imran Khan’s government and seeks to keep him out of power, Ms. Horst clarified that Pakistan’s future leadership is determined by its people and institutions in consultation with political parties. The US is focused on supporting the democratic process, striving for free, fair, and inclusive elections.

Ms. Horst reiterated that the United States does not favor any specific candidate or party. The country aims to strengthen the US-Pakistan partnership with the leader chosen by the people.

Regarding the arrest of Pakistani Americans in Pakistan for their participation in political activities, Ms. Horst highlighted the US commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad. US consular officers work to ensure that detained US citizens receive fair treatment according to the law.
