Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Secretary General, Ahsan Iqbal, sharply criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accusing them of soliciting foreign intervention in Pakistan’s internal affairs.
In particular, he lambasted the PTI for approaching the United States (US) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in pursuit of what he termed as an ‘NRO’ (a political amnesty).
Iqbal’s remarks came in response to PTI’s request to the IMF for an audit of the 2024 nationwide elections before engaging in bailout talks. He denounced this move as a perilous invitation for external interference in Pakistan’s sovereignty, stating that such actions could jeopardize the nation’s autonomy.
Speaking on the Geo News program “Naya Pakistan with Shahzad Iqbal,” Ahsan Iqbal underscored that addressing allegations of election rigging should be addressed domestically through Pakistan’s judicial and electoral systems, rather than involving foreign entities.
He contended that the PTI’s focus on seeking international intervention was a diversion from the real issues facing the country. Furthermore, Iqbal emphasized the need for political unity and cooperation among all parties to navigate through the challenges confronting Pakistan post-elections.
Despite the PML-N’s victory in the recent polls, Iqbal extended an olive branch to the PTI, urging them to play a constructive role as an opposition. The PML-N leader highlighted the democratic process’s legitimacy, asserting that those with grievances regarding the election should seek redressal through proper channels within Pakistan’s institutional framework.
In the aftermath of the 2024 nationwide elections, the PML-N is positioned to form the government in the Centre and Punjab with the support of allied parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Meanwhile, the PTI, despite emerging as the largest party, faces challenges in garnering enough support for governance, even with coalition alliances.
