KARACHI: The weather has exacerbated energy shortages in Sindh as residents consume more electricity to cope, straining lines and transformers.
Electrical engineer Muhammad Obedullah Tufail reported that air conditioner use increases during a heatwave, but it’s not the only cause of power disruptions.
11 kilovolts (kV) power business and residential areas This feeder’s load and temperature are fixed.
Heatwaves cause the 11kV feeder to be overloaded. Load shedding does not necessarily cause a heatwave power outage. Overloaded feeders trip.
Overloading transformers impairs a region’s power supply.
Heatwaves weaken subterranean cable joints, causing ruptures.
Ghotki, Sindh, endures extended power interruptions. Sepco Subdivision Officer Muhammad Din reported electricity was interrupted to meet demand.
Larkana Sepco’s chief indicated there was another reason. He said that theft and line losses caused power outages. In rural regions, power theft has caused 12-to-18 hours of load shedding.
In Sukkur, board exams have changed the load-shedding timetable.
Saeed Dawich, Sepco chief in Sukkur, related it to Matric exam shifts. “We had to change the load-shedding schedule so exam centres had uninterrupted electricity for the second shift.”
It’s controlled this way from Sukkur to Dadu, he said.
