ISLAMABAD: Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), has appointed Senator Ishaq Dar to lead the PML-N’s election cell for the upcoming 2024 polls.
This is announced on Saturday through a notification issued by PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal with Shehbaz Sharif’s approval.
“With the approval of the President PML-N, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar is hereby appointed as Chairman, Election Cell PML-N, for General Elections 2024,” read the notification.
PML-N’s spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), noted that the party’s election-related activities would gain momentum following this recent appointment.
It’s worth noting that the PML-N had previously called for applications from interested candidates to contest the upcoming general elections.
The Supreme Court, on Friday, confirmed February 8, 2024, as the date for the nationwide general elections, following a notification from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the election date. This decision came after a three-member bench of the apex court heard various petitions requesting elections to be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the national and provincial assemblies.
Supreme Court Of Pakistan Declares Unconstitutional Assembly Dissolution By President As Treason
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has declared that the dissolution of the assembly by the president after a no-confidence motion against the chief executive is “unconstitutional” and falls under the category of treason.
This observation was made during the hearing of several pleas requesting timely elections within 90 days of the assembly’s dissolution. The three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa, included Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan.
Last year, in April, President Dr. Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, citing Article 58 of the Constitution. The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Qasim Suri, who was chairing the session, rejected the no-confidence motion against Khan, referring to it as a foreign conspiracy and a contradiction of Article 5 of the Constitution.
After hearing arguments from all sides, Chief Justice Isa issued an order stating that every constitutional violation has serious and far-reaching consequences. The court emphasized the importance of the Constitution and highlighted that a prime minister can be removed through a no-confidence motion as specified by the Constitution.
