ISLAMABAD: With the search for consensus becoming more intense, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz, are preparing for a second round of discussions today to finalize the critical selection of the caretaker prime minister. The meeting yesterday did not yield any clear results regarding the caretaker setup.
Today’s meeting follows an initial one yesterday that concluded without a clear resolution. The two leaders have to arrive at a decision that adheres to the requirements of the Constitution.
In the corridors of power in Islamabad, excitement is palpable as the focus of political discussions centers around this pivotal dialogue between these influential personalities.
According to the constitutional framework, the prime minister invited the opposition leader to engage in deliberations regarding the appointment of the caretaker prime minister. As per the constitutional stipulations, both leaders have a three-day timeframe to mutually agree upon a candidate.
If they fail to reach an agreement, a parliamentary committee will take responsibility for resolving the matter. In the event of a deadlock within the committee, the Election Commission of Pakistan will assume the authority to make the final decision.
‘No imported person’
Opposition Leader Raja Riaz provided a statement to the media, sharing the developments in their talks. He revealed, “I urged the Prime Minister to evaluate the names put forth by our side. We reached an agreement to continue discussions concerning the remaining six names.”
