On Friday, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 province-wide citing “the prevailing law and order situation,” effectively prohibiting protests and public gatherings.
This action coincides with planned nationwide protests by the PTI today, demanding the release of their detained leader, Imran Khan.
According to an order from the Home Department obtained, Section 144 is immediately effective and will remain enforced for seven days. This measure grants authorities the power to issue directives in the public interest, including temporary bans on specified activities.
The order underscores security concerns, suggesting that gatherings could be targeted by terrorists and troublemakers, posing threats to public safety and order.
While the specific rationale for the ban was not detailed, Secretary Noor Ul Amin Mengal justified the decision as necessary for preventing immediate harm and swiftly addressing potential disruptions in Punjab.
The order explicitly prohibits assemblies, rallies, sit-ins, demonstrations, and other related activities with immediate effect.
PTI’s announcement of nationwide protests follows alleged police raids on the residences of PTI leaders in Khanewal and the reported ransacking of PTI leader PP-209 Khanewal Humayun Khan’s office.
In response, PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan condemned the imposition of Section 144 as an unjust action by the government, asserting that it reflects the government’s fear of Imran Khan and will only strengthen support for the party’s cause.
Hasan expressed confidence in Imran Khan’s eventual triumph, rallying supporters on social media platform X to remain steadfast in their pursuit of their ideals for Pakistan’s future.
