QUETTA: Sarfraz Bugti, a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former federal minister, secured the position of Leader of the House in the Balochistan Assembly on Saturday without facing any opposition. He obtained 41 votes, with four members of the National Party abstaining from the polling process.
Sarfraz Bugti is set to take the oath as the Chief Minister of Balochistan today, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled at the Governor House at 3 pm. The oath will be administered by Balochistan Governor Abdul Wali Kakar.
Sarfraz Bugti received the nomination for the Chief Minister position from his party’s Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari. Additionally, he garnered support from key leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), such as Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri and Sardar Sarfaraz Chakar Domki.
Sarfraz Bugti, who resigned as the caretaker interior minister in December of the previous year to join the PPP, expressed his commitment to inclusive development in Balochistan. He pledged to involve all parties in the process and focus on improving governance and addressing various issues.
In a statement after submitting his nomination papers, Sarfraz Bugti underscored the PPP’s belief in dialogue and resolving issues through negotiations. He called on dissatisfied individuals to join the mainstream and contribute to the country’s development.
Emphasizing the need for talks with opposition parties for the province’s development, Sarfraz Bugti welcomed positive criticism and urged against destructive politics for the broader national interest.
Sarfraz Bugti assured that consensus would be sought with the opposition to propel Balochistan forward, expressing openness for dialogue. He mentioned plans to share a roadmap for sustainable development and address common challenges in the province.
