Punjab Governorship Race: Qamar Zaman Kaira and Two Others Shortlisted for Key Role

Qamar Zaman Kaira

ISLAMABAD: As part of the power-sharing agreement between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the PPP has shortlisted Qamar Zaman Kaira and two other leaders for the prestigious position of Punjab governor.

The additional contenders from PPP for the governorship include Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood and Chaudhry Riaz. The decision on the governorship for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is still under consultation, and the official announcement for both constitutional posts is expected after the presidential elections on March 9.

The power-sharing deal was initiated last month, as neither party secured a simple majority in the February 8 general elections.

In the coalition government formation, PPP with 54 National Assembly seats agreed to support PML-N, with the understanding that PPP would acquire various constitutional posts, including Punjab and KP governors, along with the office of the president.

Asif Ali Zardari has filed his nomination papers for the presidency, and the National Assembly’s deputy speaker post has already been filled by Syed Ghulam Mustafa.

In exchange, PML-N secured the positions of prime minister and NA speaker. Recently, Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the 24th Prime Minister with 201 votes in the National Assembly, with support from PPP lawmakers, MQM-P, PML-Q, IPP, BAP, and others.

Additionally, PPP garnered PML-N’s support to form the government in Balochistan, appointing Sarfraz Bugti as the province’s Chief Minister.

Abdul Khaliq Achakzai and Ghazala Gola from PML-N and PPP, respectively, were elected as the Balochistan Assembly’s speaker and deputy speaker.

The ongoing collaboration reflects the intricate web of alliances shaping Pakistan’s political landscape.
