PTI Unveils Strategy for May 9 Rallies

May 9 Rallies

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has finalized its strategy to commemorate the anniversary of the May 9 mayhem by organizing rallies nationwide.

As per a circular signed by PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan, following the directives of the party’s founding chairman, Imran Khan, rallies will be held at each provincial assembly constituency level across the country to mark the occasion.

These rallies will be led by elected representatives, ticket holders, and party office-bearers. Additionally, Pakistan and PTI flags will adorn buildings on this significant day.

Placards featuring former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s photo with “Prisoner Number 804” written on them will be prominently displayed, along with organizing prayers for PTI ‘martyrs’ during the rallies.

The events of May 9 last year, which saw Imran Khan’s arrest on the premises of the Islamabad High Court, sparked nationwide protests. The ensuing riots resulted in damage to public and private property, with mobs even targeting military installations.

Subsequently, the government launched a crackdown on those protesting Imran Khan’s arrest, identifying individuals through footage and cell phone tracking and initiating trials in military courts.

While the PTI claims over 10,000 of its workers were arrested, the government maintains that only a few thousand were detained.

The PTI challenged the military court cases in the Supreme Court and alleged that the riots were orchestrated by the establishment to destabilize the party.

During the crackdown, many PTI leaders were arrested, and subsequently, several announced their departure from the party through press conferences.
