ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has received prohibited funding from 34 foreign nationals and 351 foreign companies. The ECP further stated that PTI Chairman Imran Khan has failed to fulfill his obligations.
The Commission said the PTI has received foreign funding from USA, Canada, Australia and UAE.
This was stated in the verdict of the three-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chairman Sikandar Sultan Raja. The decision was announced unanimously on Tuesday morning, at 10:22am.
The ECP said that the PTI has concealed 13 bank accounts while the PTI chief Imran Khan has submitted ‘false’ affidavit.
Imran Khan had personally issued certificates to the ECP in regards to Article 13(2) of the PPO to the effect that PTI does not receive funds from prohibited sources.
In its verdict, the Election Commission also stated the PTI has violated Article 17 of the Constitution. The ECP also announced to initiate action against PTI Chairman Imran Khan under article 63 of the Constitution, which can lead to disqualification of Khan.
The PTI foreign funding case was filed with the ECP in Nov 2014 by Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of the PTI. In June 2022, the commission reserved its decision on the case and finally announced it today amid pressure from the coalition government and political parties in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
