PPP’s Rehman Malik, 70, dies

He was admitted to Islamabad’s government-run hospital for COVID-19-related issues, his spokesperson, Riaz Ahmad Turi, acknowledged.

Rehman Malik, a prominent politician and former interior minister, died on Wednesday morning at the age of 70.

He was admitted to Islamabad’s government-run hospital for COVID-19-related issues, his spokesperson, Riaz Ahmad Turi, acknowledged.

In addition to his two boys, he leaves behind a widow.

On February 1, PPP Senator Sehar Kamran tweeted that Malik’s condition had worsened, necessitating a ventilator.

The University of Karachi awarded Malik an honorary doctorate of laws in 2013. He served as Pakistan’s interior minister from 2008 until 2013. He was former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s most trusted confidant.

As a result of his efforts, the Pakistani government bestowed upon him Pakistan’s highest civilian honour, the Sitara-e-Shujaat (the Star of Bravery). He also received Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Order of Excellence), one of the country’s most distinguished civil honours.

Condolences

Condolences poured in from all corners of the political spectrum on the announcement of his death.

“My heart goes out to Rehman Malik’s family and friends. In the name of Allah, may he be pardoned and his family be patient,” PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal tweeted.

“I am very grieved by the tragic passing of Senator #RehmanMalik. It’s a tremendous loss. May Allah grant him eternal rest. Supporting the family with our deepest sympathies,” said Sindh Assembly MPA Mumtaz Ali Chandio.

Hina Butt, the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party-Nawaz (PPP-N), also expressed her sorrow over the passing of Rehman Malik.
