Election Results System
The People’s Party has formally communicated its reservations about the election results system by submitting a written letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In the letter, the PPP-Parliamentarians raised serious objections to the new Election Management System (EMS) and highlighted concerns that it could compromise the transparency of the election process.
A key point of contention mentioned in the letter was the initial rejection of WhatsApp during a parliamentary committee session due to potential internet-related issues. The PPP argues that if WhatsApp faced challenges, the newly introduced EMS application could encounter even more problems, posing a risk to the integrity of the election results.
Given these concerns, the PPP strongly advocated for the use of WhatsApp for sending election results instead of the new EMS application. The party emphasized the importance of a reliable and proven platform for result transmission to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the electoral process.
Furthermore, the PPP recommended that Presiding Officers, responsible for transmitting election results to the Returning Officers (ROs), should also send the results directly to the candidates and election agents. This additional step aims to enhance transparency by providing real-time information to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
In an effort to address potential issues and improve communication, the PPP suggested the formation of WhatsApp groups where polling complaints could be shared. This proposal aims to streamline the reporting of concerns and ensure that any irregularities are promptly addressed.
The PPP’s letter reflects a broader concern about the potential challenges and pitfalls associated with adopting new technology in the electoral process. The party expressed apprehension that the new election results system might replicate the issues faced with the Result Transmission System (RTS) during the 2018 elections, underscoring the need for a robust and reliable mechanism to safeguard the transparency and fairness of elections in Pakistan.
