PPP Secures Landmark Victory in Sindh with Over 100 Seats, MQM-P Emerges Dominant in Karachi

In a historic turn of events in Pakistan’s general elections, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is poised to establish a government in Sindh, securing over 100 seats in the provincial assembly for the first time.

The PPP achieved a significant victory by securing 84 general seats out of the 130 in the Sindh Assembly, and it is expected to gain an additional 20 reserved seats for women and six for members of religious minorities. This anticipated tally would position the PPP with 110 members in the 168th House of the Sindh Assembly, including 10 seats won in Karachi.

Contrastingly, on the National Assembly front, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has emerged strongly with 17 seats out of the total 22, with 15 in Karachi and two in Hyderabad. The PPP, while securing 44 seats in the lower house of the Parliament from Sindh, including seven from Karachi, also witnessed the MQM-P winning 28 of the 47 seats in the provincial assembly.

The overall position of MQM-P was determined following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s announcement of “complete results” for both provincial and National Assembly constituencies. Independent candidates in the Sindh Assembly secured 14 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami and Grand Democratic Alliance each clinched two seats.

As Pakistan awaits the full outcome of the 2024 polls, with gradual announcements of complete results by the Election Commission of Pakistan, the elections marked a historic 10th general election, involving 60 million voters exercising their right to vote on February 8.

Independent candidates have notably dominated the polls, creating a contested landscape with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) both claiming the potential to form a majority government in the Centre amid ongoing controversies surrounding the outcome. Presently, PTI-backed candidates are leading with nearly 100 seats, followed by PML-N (71), PPP (53), and MQM-P (17).
