Constitutional Measures
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon expressed strong objections to the delimitation of national and provincial assembly constituencies by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). He announced that the party is actively pursuing constitutional measures against the delimitation ahead of the general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.
During a press conference in Karachi, Memon emphasized the party’s commitment to combat election rigging, asserting that no one would be allowed to manipulate the electoral process. The ECP recently finalized the delimitation of constituencies for the national and four provincial assemblies, paving the way for the announcement of the election schedule, expected in the first week of December.
Addressing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) demand for constituencies as per their preference, Memon suggested that if they disagree, they should refrain from participating in the election and approach the government directly.
Regarding the alliance between MQM-P and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) against the PPP in Sindh, Memon dismissed its significance, calling it “equal to zero plus zero” in terms of political impact. He confidently stated that PPP’s opponents would be defeated in the upcoming election.
While expressing a commitment to avoid politics of hatred and encourage collaboration, Memon warned that the PPP would respond if any political party spoke against them. He took a swipe at the PML-N’s Lahore-centric politics, highlighting that the PPP represents the entire nation, not just a specific region.
Memon questioned the PML-N’s developmental efforts outside Lahore and asserted that the PPP, with the support of the people, would participate in the elections and emerge as the majority party, offering hope to the citizens.
