PML-N’s Hanif Abbasi Labels Anwarul Haq Kakar a ‘Thief’ Amid Wheat Import Scandal

The confrontation between Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi and former caretaker prime minister, now a sitting senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar over the wheat import scandal during Kakar’s caretaker government escalated into a fiery exchange, underscoring simmering tensions within Pakistan’s political arena.

The face-to-face encounter unfolded in a private hotel in Islamabad, where Hanif Abbasi directly accused Anwar-ul-Haq of complicity in the wheat scandal, alleging financial impropriety and branding him as a thief. Abbasi’s accusations were prompted by Kakar’s defense of his decision to import wheat despite a surplus in the local market, a move that has drawn scrutiny and criticism.

In response, Anwar Haq Kakar challenged Abbasi’s motives, questioning whether his intent was to effectuate an arrest. Kakar further hinted at the potential exposure of sensitive information regarding Form-47 of the Election Commission of Pakistan, suggesting that certain members of the PML-N might have cause for concern. This veiled reference to alleged tampering in Form-47 aligns with claims made by the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), whose members sit in parliament under the auspices of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

The heated exchange between Abbasi and Kakar underscores the deep-rooted political divisions and accusations of corruption that continue to plague Pakistan’s political landscape. As both sides engage in a war of words, the wheat import scandal remains a contentious issue, emblematic of broader concerns surrounding governance and accountability within the country’s political institutions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Pakistan’s democratic governance and the imperative for transparency and integrity in public office.
