PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan criticized the election of independent candidates, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, as senators, labeling it a “continuation of the hybrid system.”
Speaking on program Doosra Rukh, Khan expressed that granting senate positions to independent members perpetuates the hybrid system initiated in 2017. He suggested that a simple majority would have led to a different scenario, potentially addressing concerns regarding the accountability of retired generals Qamar Javed Bajwa and Faiz Hameed.
Khan emphasized the importance of either resolving people’s issues or inciting chaos, particularly given the economic challenges. However, he warned that those who undermine the constitution will face consequences sooner or later.
“Mohsin Naqvi sahib or Faisal Vawda sahib, they are not our representatives,” Khan remarked, indicating that despite supporting Naqvi’s candidacy, it was a consequence of the 2017 hybrid system.
“One is currently in Adiala jail, and the other is this,” he continued, suggesting that such circumstances cannot be changed overnight but must be gradually managed. Responding to inquiries about the hybrid system, he posed a rhetorical question, “How else could an independent candidate become a senator in this system?”
The senator noted that while there is an existing system in the country, it’s not the one they intended; rather, they find themselves entangled within the framework of the hybrid system.
Responding to queries about PML-N’s support for independents, the senator expressed concerns that the economic situation would have deteriorated further and chaos would have ensued without their support.
Regarding the decision to form a government after the February 8 polls, he remarked that although the majority of his party disagreed, it was decided by Mian Nawaz Sharif.
