ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, the National Accountability Bureau filed a new reference in the Toshakhana case involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, as reported.
The reference was submitted to an accountability court in Islamabad by Investigating Officer Mohsin Haroon and Case Officer Waqar Hassan.
The new NAB reference accuses the couple of purchasing a jewelry set from Toshakhana, valued at Rs75 million, and subsequently selling it. This development follows a recent order by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that placed Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi under judicial custody.
The couple is being scrutinized for allegedly misusing gifts received from foreign dignitaries during their tenure.
On July 13, the couple was acquitted in the Iddat case, but their relief was short-lived. Later that day, they were arrested by NAB in connection with the new Toshakhana reference.
The arrest occurred after the Islamabad district and sessions court accepted their appeals against a prior conviction in the Iddat case.
In February, a trial court had sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 each for a fraudulent nikah. This verdict had been the final legal obstacle preventing the former prime minister’s release.
However, his sentences in the Toshakhana cases were suspended, and he was acquitted by the IHC in the cipher case.
