KARACHI: Following a high-level meeting with the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has called for political stability in the country.
Dispelling reports suggesting talks between MQM-P and PML-N regarding government formation, Siddiqui emphasized the need for stakeholders to act beyond their political interests during a press conference in Karachi.
As political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and PML-N, engage in discussions and alliances to secure support after the inconclusive results of the February 8 polls, where no party secured a simple majority, political uncertainty prevails.
PTI-backed independent candidates have emerged as the largest group with 93 National Assembly seats, while PML-N and PPP have secured 78 and 54 seats, respectively, indicating the possibility of a hung parliament.
MQM-P’s interaction with PML-N leadership in Lahore was clarified by Siddiqui, who explicitly denied demanding the post of Sindh governor for MQM-P. PML-N leader Azam Nazeer Tarar considered MQM-P’s visit a goodwill gesture, stating that the party would decide on forming a government after consulting with allies.
PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira stressed the need for reconciliation amid political uncertainty. The prospect of PPP allying, particularly with PML-N, will be discussed in the central executive committee’s meeting.
Earlier in the day, PML-N Secretary Information Marriyum Aurangzeb claimed that MQM-P had reached a consensus on basic points for political cooperation with PML-N. The MQM-P delegation, including Siddiqui and Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, met PML-N leadership at the residence of Nawaz Sharif, indicating ongoing efforts to shape potential alliances and coalitions in the evolving political landscape.
