Defense Minister Khawaja Asif delivered a forceful speech in the National Assembly, sharply criticizing the recent actions and rhetoric of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. He questioned PTI’s commitment to democratic principles and condemned the party’s political tactics.
Asif challenged the notion of involving the military in political matters, asking, “Which constitution states that a political figure should only engage with the army?” He criticized the idea that Pakistan’s existence is tied to a single individual, questioning, “Can the existence of Pakistan be defined by the existence of a person?”
He also condemned inflammatory remarks allegedly made about mobilizing Pashtun forces to attack Punjab, stating, “What will be the result if someone calls for an invasion of Punjab?” Asif emphasized that such statements undermine the country’s constitutional integrity and unity.
The defense minister expressed shock over the attacks on military installations on May 9, questioning the logic of defending after desecrating military targets. He criticized the hypocrisy of those who, after desecrating military sites, offer prayers for the fallen.
Asif contrasted the reaction to PTI leader Imran Khan’s arrest with his own leader’s imprisonment, noting, “Their chairman is arrested, while my leader was imprisoned along with his entire family.” He accused PTI members of “selling their conscience.”
In a heated exchange, Asif accused PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan of hypocrisy and recalled the imposition of Article 6 during Khan’s tenure. He criticized PTI’s reactions to his accusations, labeling their rhetoric as dangerous and undemocratic.

Asif expressed grave concerns about recent threats to Pakistan’s unity and constitutional framework, criticizing PTI for its actions, which he said are “incompatible with democratic values.” He suggested that PTI’s political strategy reflects a fundamental flaw, emphasizing that the recent incidents are part of a broader issue.
He reiterated his commitment to democratic protest and stressed the need to protect Pakistan’s constitutional and political unity amid internal and external challenges.

PPP’s Naveed Qamar described the allegations surrounding PTI leaders as a “serious matter.” He recalled the 2014 PTI sit-in, stating, “When Ali Muhammad Khan and his colleagues approached Parliament, we considered it an attack.” He warned that failure to act decisively could lead to escalating consequences.
