JUI-F Announces Abstention, MQM-P Sets Conditions in Presidential Vote Dynamics

Presidential Vote

KARACHI: As the upcoming presidential vote approaches, the political landscape in Pakistan is undergoing shifts, with the JUI-F opting to abstain and the MQM-P setting conditions.

JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman declared that his party would abstain from voting, expressing a personal preference for opposition candidate Mehmood Khan Achakzai over PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari.

However, he emphasized that the party’s decision to abstain supersedes personal wishes, dealing a blow to the ruling alliance’s hopes for support.

Additionally, Maulana Fazlur Rehman ruled out any possibility of JUI-F joining the government and hinted at a nationwide protest campaign against what he perceived as rigged elections.

He accused the establishment of interfering with the people’s mandate and reiterated dissatisfaction with the election results, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, where he alleged the mandate was bought.

Regarding the MQM-P’s stance, senior leader Dr. Farooq Sattar mentioned that there have been no discussions with the PPP about the presidential elections. If approached, MQM-P will present demands and seek answers, particularly related to the alleged misuse of budgetary funds.

Dr. Sattar emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, expressing the party’s interest in understanding Zardari’s future plans and his role in fostering harmony among provincial factions if elected president.

The evolving dynamics indicate the complexity of alliances and negotiations in the lead-up to the presidential vote.
