Prime Minister Imran Khan named Parvez Elahi as Punjab’s chief minister on Monday evening, in a spectacular change of events. Elahi is the leader of the Punjab Muslim League-Q, which is in a coalition with Khan’s PTI.
The PML-Q currently has five members in the national legislature and ten in the Punjab legislature.
These votes are critical for the PTI administration, which is attempting to prevent the Opposition from ousting the prime minister through a motion of no-confidence.
For the time being, the situation at the centre is uncertain and rapid.
Daily political developments imply that the vote of no-confidence might swing either way on the day of the vote. Can the PTI, however, rely on stability in Punjab because of naming Elahi as CM? Is it even possible for Elahi to win in the provincial assembly?
The renegade PTI members of the provincial assembly (MPAs), led by the Jahangir Tareen group, are a prominent role in the province. What will they do with their support?
Elahi will require 186 votes, or a simple majority, in the Punjab Assembly’s 371 members to be elected chief minister.
The ruling coalition now has 194 members, including the PTI, the Rah-e-Haq, and the PML-Q.
Total: 194
• PML-Q — 10
• PTI — 183
• Rah-e-Haq — 1
On the other hand, the Opposition, which includes the PML-N and the PPP, has 172 seats.
Total: 172
• PML-N 165
• PPP 7
There are five independents in the assembly as well.
For the time being, Elahi has more than enough votes to win the chief ministership, surpassing the 186 requirements. But only if all members of the ruling coalition vote for Elahi. The Jahangir Tareen party, which claims to have over 20 MPAs in its ranks, might put a monkey in the works for the chief minister prospect.
All of these MPAs are members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). If these go against Elahi, he will have to wrest a few MPAs from the PML-N in order to rise to the top.
In Punjab, the PTI already claims to have five MPAs from the PML-N and one from the PPP who have defected from the Opposition camp.
Elahi might possibly seek assistance from the Punjab assembly’s five independents, Jugnu Mohsin, Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Bilal Warraich, Qasim Abbas, and Chaudhry Nisar.
