LONDON: Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for an official inquiry into President Arif Alvi’s conduct, following a tweet by the President that has led to a constitutional crisis in Pakistan. Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently in London, expressed the need for a transparent inquiry to determine the facts through a thorough investigation.
Shehbaz emphasized the need to investigate the conduct of President Alvi to ascertain whether his staff made a mistake or if the President provided inaccurate information. He highlighted that the process of signing summaries and bills is a legal requirement for prime ministers and other office bearers and that official business must adhere to established procedures.
The PML-N president stressed that official business is not conducted through informal means and that the President’s role involves either approving or rejecting bills through proper signing procedures. Shehbaz pointed out that President Alvi holds the highest constitutional office in the state, warranting a comprehensive inquiry to know the truth.
Shehbaz questioned the timing of President Alvi’s statement and why he remained silent for an extended period. He called on the President to clarify why he did not fulfill his duties as required and why he only recalled certain details at a later time. Shehbaz also raised concerns about President Alvi’s failure to adhere to established rules and protocols, particularly regarding the handling of bills.
The call for an inquiry into President Alvi’s conduct comes after the President’s removal of his secretary and his statement that the president neither assented to nor returned certain bills.
