ISLAMABAD: The farewell session of the National Assembly is scheduled to begin on July 20th. This session will involve important legislative activities, including electoral reforms, as well as farewell speeches by the members.
According to sources from the NA Secretariat, the lower house of parliament will likely convene on Thursday. The session will continue until the assembly’s dissolution. Instructions have been issued to the NA Secretariat, and a summary for this purpose is expected to be sent to President Dr. Arif Alvi on the same day.
The session will encompass significant lawmaking, group photo sessions, and farewell speeches by the assembly members. On July 24th, the Electoral Reforms Bill will be passed in the National Assembly. It would be followed by approval from the lower and upper houses of parliament. Subsequently, it will be sent to the president for final approval.
Notably, leaders from other parliamentary parties will address the session. For instance, leaders including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and estranged PTI leader Raja Riaz, are expected to address the session.
Regarding the term of the NA, a federal minister stated that there will be no extension. He said that there is a possibility of early dissolution a few days before the end of the term. The decision on early dissolution has not been made yet, and it will depend on the prevailing circumstances.
PPP’s Commerce Minister Naveed Qamar revealed that his party proposed dissolving the National Assembly and two provincial assemblies (Sindh and Balochistan) on August 8th. It would provide three months for election campaigns.
