ECP to consult all major political parties in order to decide the election date

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has planned to consult major political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), regarding the anticipated date of the upcoming general elections, which are expected to take place next year. These consultations are expected to encompass discussions on the election roadmap as well as issues related to delimitation and voter lists.

The consultations with various political parties will be held separately, with discussions scheduled to take place in the coming days. The prominent parties that will be engaging in these discussions include Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Awami National Party (ANP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

The Election Commission expressed satisfaction with the recently introduced Result Compilation System (RCS) after receiving a briefing. The RCS allows presiding officers to immediately transmit election results to returning officers through a mobile app. It also enables returning officers to compile inconclusive results efficiently and accurately, providing quick data about the votes.

Parties

The commission conducted regular mock exercises to test the RCS, ensuring its effectiveness at various stages. Following the thorough assessment, the commission confirmed its full satisfaction with the system.

The Election Commission has also been actively engaged in the delimitation of constituencies based on the 2023 digital census. The commission has communicated with provincial governments and the statistics department. It has urged them to provide necessary maps and data to facilitate the delimitation process.

For the purpose of carrying out fresh delimitations, five delimitation committees have been formed and notified. These committees will receive essential data, including districts’ maps until August 31 to expedite the delimitation process.
