ECP Hints at Possible Election Delay If Polling Relies on Digital Census 2023

It will take at least seven months to conduct elections on the newly defined constituencies resulting from the new census.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has raised concerns over delays in holding the general elections if they are conducted based on the new census.

According to the ECP sources, holding the general elections on the newly defined constituencies resulting from the new census will take seven months.

After approving the new census, establishing the new constituencies is estimated to take four months. Subsequently, an additional three months will be required to address administrative matters. These matters are related to the redrawing of electoral boundaries and other electoral processes.

As per the ECP’s assessment, holding the general elections based on the updated constituencies will require a total of seven months. This period starts from the date the new census is officially notified.

In contrast, the commission has expressed its readiness to conduct elections within a shorter timeframe of three months. This applies if the general elections are based on the 2017 census data.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a meeting of the Council of Common Interest (CCI). He is summoned to address the contentious issue of approving the digital census 2023 conducted earlier this year.

Police Raid Gandapur’s Residence: Afridi Rearrested

Meanwhile, Gandapur was not present at home at that time.

The police have claimed that they found flood relief and coronavirus items during the raid. They have also recovered bags of slingshots and sticks.

Ali Amin Gandapur was released from Sukkur Central Jail in May on bail. In the same month, the Punjab government asked Rawalpindi police to arrest him in a criminal case. Police have registered the case in March this year against PTI leader.

Consequently, police raided his residence on Thursday night, but could not arrest him.
