ECP Designates Returning Officers for Upcoming Senate Election

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken decisive steps in preparation for the upcoming Senate election anticipated in the first week of April. In a recent notification, the ECP revealed the appointed Returning Officers (ROs) for Islamabad and the four provinces.

Saeed Gul, the Director General Training of the ECP, has been designated as the Returning Officer in the federal capital. Meanwhile, the provincial election commissioners, namely Aijaz Anwar Chohan, Sharifullah, Shamshad Khan, and Muhammad Farid Afridi, will assume the role of Returning Officers in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, respectively.

The electoral process will involve National Assembly members electing candidates from the federal capital for one general seat and one technocrat seat, including Ulema. Simultaneously, members of the provincial assemblies in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan are urged to elect representatives for seven general seats, two women seats, and two technocrat seats, including Ulema, from each province. Additionally, one seat for non-Muslims from Punjab and Sindh left vacant after the incumbent senators’ terms expiration, will be filled.

Moreover, by-elections are scheduled for six vacant Senate seats on March 14. Polling will take place at the upper house of parliament and in the assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan in Karachi and Quetta. These vacancies arose in the general category in the federal capital, with two in Sindh and three in Balochistan, as senators relinquished their positions following their election to the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.

Prominent figures like Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri transitioned to the lower house of parliament after succeeding in the recent general elections.

Similarly, Nisar Ahmed Khoro and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar secured positions in the Sindh Assembly, while Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti became members of the Balochistan Assembly. The election landscape is poised for dynamic changes as the democratic process unfolds in various regions.
