The National Assembly will continue its critical session today to examine the unified opposition’s no-confidence resolution against Prime Minister Imran Khan (March 31).
Shehbaz Sharif, the head of the opposition in the National Assembly, filed a no-confidence resolution against the premier on March 28, which had the backing of 161 MPs. After a headcount of those in favour of the proposal, Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, who was presiding over the session, accepted it.
On March 25, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser adjourned the house session without tabling the no-confidence resolution against the premier, as is customary, to pay tribute to legislators who had died.
Following the decision of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) to break away from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the number of lawmakers on the treasury benches has been reduced to 164, with 155 PTI MNAs, four from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), three from the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), one from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).
The united opposition, on the other hand, outnumbered the 172 lawmakers required for a simple majority, with 84 MNAs from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), 56 from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), 15 from the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, seven from the MQM-P, four MNAs from the BAP, four individual MNAs, one MNA from the Jamhori Watan Party, one MNA from In the National Assembly, there are a total of 177 legislators that currently support the opposition against the PM Imran Khan and ruling PTI.
