Court Grants 8-Day Remand for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi

8-Day Remand

RAWALPINDI: An accountability court on Sunday approved an eight-day physical remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, along with his wife, Bushra Bibi, in connection with a new graft case.

This decision came shortly after the couple was acquitted in the iddat or illegal marriage case.

The PTI founder and his wife faced new legal challenges as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested them in a fresh Toshakhana reference, despite their recent acquittal.

Additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka had previously overturned the couple’s conviction, which had sentenced them to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs500,000 each.

The trial court had initially found their nikah to be fraudulent after Khawar Maneka, Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband, contested the legality of their marriage.

The initial charges against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi centered on the claim that their marriage violated iddat, a waiting period mandated by Islamic law following a woman’s divorce.

The court’s decision to acquit them in this case provided a brief respite, but their hope of release was short-lived.

Shortly after their acquittal, a team from the anti-corruption watchdog, led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, arrested the couple at Adiala Jail.

This new arrest was related to allegations of “misuse of power for acquiring Toshakhana gifts.” Toshakhana, a department that handles gifts received by government officials, became the focal point of the new graft case.

The NAB’s fresh reference accused Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi of misusing their positions to improperly acquire valuable gifts.

The approval of the eight-day remand signifies a new phase in the legal troubles for the former prime minister and his wife.

The accountability court’s decision allows investigators to further probe the allegations and gather evidence related to the misuse of Toshakhana gifts.

This development adds another layer of complexity to the couple’s legal battles, coming on the heels of their recent acquittal in the iddat case.

The sequence of events highlights the ongoing legal scrutiny facing Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Their arrest and subsequent remand underscore the NAB’s commitment to pursuing corruption cases and holding individuals accountable for alleged misconduct.

As the investigation proceeds, the couple’s legal team will likely continue to challenge the charges and seek relief from the courts.

In summary, the accountability court’s approval of an eight-day remand for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana graft case marks a significant development in their ongoing legal saga.

Despite their recent acquittal in the iddat case, the couple now faces a fresh set of charges related to the alleged misuse of power, prolonging their legal and political challenges.
