LAHORE: The PPP candidate won the Punjab National Assembly seat, breaking a four-year seat drought during which the party had been unable to secure any seats in the state.
In the previous ten years, Punjab had only made two NA seats for the PPP.
Son of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani and candidate Syed Ali Musa Gillani won the NA-157 Multan-IV by-election.
Meher Bano Qureshi, daughter of PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, lost to him by over 93,000 votes in the constituency.
Qureshi joined PTI in February 2012 after winning the NA-148 seat on the PPP ticket in 2008.
In the by-elections, the PPP gave the ticket to Musa, who defeated their main rival PML-Abdul N’s Ghaffar Dogar.
Since then, the PPP’s performance in by-elections and general elections in Punjab has been dismal. Malik Ghulam Rabbani Khar was the only PPP ticket holder to win the NA seat in by-elections following the 2013 elections.
