ISLAMABAD: In a notable development, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reportedly embraced the idea of further decentralizing powers in Sindh, according to sources from a meeting with a delegation from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
During the discussions between Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the MQM-P delegation, which included Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Dr. Farooq Sattar, the focus centered on the empowerment of local bodies representatives in the province.
Sources disclosed that Dr. Farooq Sattar underscored the shared vision of decentralizing powers to the grassroots level, attributing it to the aspirations of Benazir Bhutto.
Expressing alignment with this vision, he conveyed to Bilawal, “It was Benazir Bhutto’s dream to devaluate the powers to the grass-root level.”
Former Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Dr. Farooq Sattar advocated for enhanced empowerment of local bodies, emphasizing its consonance with the goals set by Benazir Bhutto.
In response, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari assured the MQM-P delegation that he would champion the cause within the PPP ranks, signaling a willingness to pursue further decentralization.
The meeting took place in Islamabad, where Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui’s residence in the parliament lodges.
The PPP Chairman was accompanied by prominent figures, including Yousuf Raza Gilani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Syed Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar, Sherry Rehman, and Saad Rafique and Azam Nazir Tarar from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Following the meeting, the MQM-P made a significant announcement, declaring its support for PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari in the forthcoming presidential election.
