Several police officials, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), sustained injuries during a confrontation between two police teams in Karachi. The clash erupted in North Nazimabad over custody of suspects in a short-term kidnapping case.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night after officers from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station disputed which team should handle the suspects.
Dispute Over Suspects Triggers Physical Clash
According to officials, Karachi’s police chief had assigned the SIU to arrest the suspects. Acting on location information, the SIU’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team raided a property in North Nazimabad and arrested them.
However, the station house officer (SHO) of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan arrived with his team and demanded custody of the suspects. He maintained that his station had already been investigating the case and had jurisdiction over the arrests.
The SIU-CIA team refused to hand over the suspects. The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation between the two groups.
DSP and Head Moharrir Injured
During the scuffle, DSP Minhaj and the head moharrir of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station sustained injuries. Both sides reportedly exchanged blows during the confrontation.
The SIU-CIA team subsequently took the two officials into its custody. Senior police officers intervened and secured their release, allowing them to return to their station.
Authorities later resolved the dispute between the two police units. Officials confirmed that the suspects were eventually handed over to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station.
Separate Police Raid Reported in Karachi
In a separate incident on Wednesday, South District Police raided the residence of Azad Khan Jakhrani in Karachi’s Khayaban-e-Rahat area of DHA Phase VI. He is the brother of Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani.
Reports said security staff resisted the police team, leading to a heated exchange with the station house officer. The team later left the premises. The family alleged that the raid had taken place at the request of the MNA. Police have not publicly established that allegation in the available report.
