Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has expressed confidence that his party will emerge as the leading force in the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. While acknowledging a close contest, he said the final outcome would ultimately depend on the public’s decision.
Speaking during a television programme, Sanaullah shared his assessment of the first phase of polling in the Mirpur division. He said he expects the PML-N to secure eight or nine of the 13 seats being contested. However, he also admitted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) appears stronger in three constituencies and could win those seats.
Rana Sanaullah Clarifies Earlier Election Remarks
Sanaullah also addressed comments previously attributed to him regarding the election results. He clarified that he never claimed “11 seats are in our pocket.” Instead, he explained that the party is working hard to win as many constituencies as possible.
Furthermore, he stressed that voters alone will determine the election outcome. He said the PML-N would fully respect the public mandate regardless of the final results. Moreover, he expressed hope that the PPP would also accept the verdict.
Responding to criticism of the party’s election campaign, Sanaullah rejected claims that the PML-N used government resources to influence voters. He said the party did not inaugurate development projects during the campaign period.
“Some friends are determined to give the wrong color to any issue,” he remarked while dismissing allegations of undue political influence.
Polling Continues Amid Tensions and Rigging Allegations
Polling day witnessed several tense incidents across Mirpur, Bhimber, and Kotli. Reports included clashes in Nakyal, the suspension and arrest of presiding officers in Kotli, and allegations of rigging in the LA-10 Kotli constituency.
Meanwhile, vote counting continues across the region. Early results indicate that several PML-N candidates are leading. Political observers believe the contest remains primarily between the PML-N and PPP, despite both parties being allies in Pakistan’s federal government. The final results will determine which party secures the strongest position in the AJK elections.
