The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has taken strong measures in three important cases by taking them one step forward to the decision-making process after the hearing of these cases. These three important cases include the cases of suicides of two students and the video from the operating theater.
Focus shifts to misconduct and student welfare
The hearing regarding the scandal involving the video of the operation theater at Lady Wellington Hospital, Lahore was one of the most significant among all. In addition, there were two cases of suicide among the students of the medical college. The first incident was that of Fareeha who was a final year MBBS student at Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore. The other case involved the death of Fehmida Leghari who was a third-year student at Muhammad Medical College Mirpurkhas.
Calls for accountability and safer institutions
After these deliberations, the council decided to refer all three cases to the Disciplinary Committee of the Council, which will take further decisions on them next week. It was emphasized that in case of negligence, appropriate actions would be taken.
In addition, Mr. Rizwan Taj emphasized the pressing need for an effective grievance system in Pakistani medical colleges. It is necessary that students should be able to express themselves freely and feel protected and supported during their training period.
