Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a nationwide initiative to expand students’ access to digital education through the PM Youth Chromebook Scheme. The programme aims to distribute 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks and internet devices across Pakistan within two years.
The prime minister launched the scheme during a ceremony in Islamabad on Sunday, October 25, 2026. He also distributed laptops and internet devices to high-performing Grade 9 students and students from seminaries.
500,000 Chromebooks Planned for Students in Two Years
Addressing the ceremony, PM Shehbaz described young people as Pakistan’s greatest asset and stressed the importance of modern education. He said the country was beginning a new journey towards empowering students and widening their educational opportunities.
Highlighting the scale of the initiative, the prime minister compared the new scheme with an earlier laptop distribution programme.
“In the past, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz distributed 600,00 laptops in 10 years. Now, 500,000 Chromebooks will be distributed in two years,” he said.
The initiative focuses on providing students with digital devices and internet access. Consequently, the programme aims to help young people develop skills and knowledge for today’s educational and professional challenges.
PM Highlights Equal Educational Opportunities
During his address, Shehbaz emphasised that talent and determination do not depend on a person’s financial background. He stressed that students from different economic circumstances deserve opportunities to succeed.
Moreover, the prime minister highlighted the need to equip young people with relevant knowledge and skills. He said modern education could help students prepare for emerging challenges and future opportunities.
He also referred to the construction of at least 27 Danish schools across the country. These institutions aim to provide excellent facilities and educational services free of charge.
The initiative reflects the government’s stated focus on improving educational access for deserving students. In addition, digital devices could support learning opportunities for students who face limited access to educational resources.
Youth Programme Chairman Highlights Digital Education Efforts
Before the prime minister’s address, Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashhood spoke about the initiative’s digital education goals.
Mashhood said the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation had taken practical steps to provide digital facilities to 500,000 Pakistani students.
He also said overseas Pakistanis had regained confidence in the incumbent government. According to Mashhood, they wanted to contribute towards the country’s development.
Furthermore, he highlighted the government’s efforts to empower young people and provide equal opportunities. He also pointed to the role of Danish schools in helping deserving students pursue education and access opportunities for advancement.
Digital Access Remains Central to Youth Empowerment
The PM Youth Chromebook Scheme places digital learning at the centre of its educational support efforts. Through the planned distribution, the government aims to extend access to technology among students nationwide.
However, the initiative’s broader impact will depend on effective distribution and students’ ability to access internet services. The announced two-year timeline sets the target for distributing 500,000 refurbished Chromebooks and internet devices.
The programme’s launch marks a new step in the government’s stated efforts to strengthen youth empowerment, educational access and digital learning opportunities across Pakistan.
