Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, was given good news on Monday regarding the burgeoning IT industry in Pakistan. It was brought to his attention that the value of IT exports might touch the level of $4.5 billion to $4.6 billion in the current fiscal year. The news was given to him during an important meeting held under his chairmanship.
This projected growth reflects the sectorโs rising importance to the national economy. It also highlights the governmentโs continued focus on digital development and export promotion.
Internet Connections Surge Across the Country
Transitioning from exports to infrastructure, the meeting revealed strong progress in digital connectivity. Domestic internet connections jumped sharply from 1.9 million in 2024 to 5.10 million in 2026. This expansion brings more people online and creates fresh opportunities for freelancers and tech professionals.
The recent 5G spectrum auction also generated $509 million in revenue for the government. Furthermore, efforts to promote artificial intelligence gained momentum through โIndus AI Week,โ which took place in February 2025 across 30 cities. The event attracted over 100 international delegates and featured 88 pavilions.
Government Pushes Digital Inclusion Nationwide
Officials also updated the prime minister on several ongoing projects. Fibre connectivity now reaches government schools and health units in Islamabad, while free internet hotspots in the capital are in their final stages of installation. E-learning pods are being set up in popular public spots like Saidpur Model Village and Fatima Jinnah Park.
PM Shehbaz said that the development of the IT industry and increasing exports was a priority area for the government. He instructed the officials to accelerate the construction of Asaan Khidmat Centers in Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK. Furthermore, he emphasized cooperation with provincial governments in order to bridge the gap between cities and villages when it comes to access to information technology.
He expressed optimism about the massive potential that the youth of Pakistan possesses in the field of information technology.
