NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reached New York to represent Pakistan at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. An official delegation is also accompanying the Prime Minister.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi are accompanying Shehbaz during the visit.
The prime minister will address the UN General Assembly on September 25 and present Pakistan’s position on key regional and global developments.
According to the Foreign Office, Shehbaz will stress dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and peaceful settlement of disputes during his address.
He is also expected to highlight Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts to reduce regional tensions and promote peace.
Moreover, the prime minister will outline Pakistan’s priorities regarding sustainable development, climate change, counterterrorism and Islamophobia.
He will also discuss challenges facing developing countries and the Global South, along with global economic pressures and reforms to multilateral institutions.
Shehbaz will raise the issues of Kashmir and Palestine, reiterating Pakistan’s support for self-determination and the Palestinian cause.
Pakistan has said it will continue highlighting the situation in Jammu and Kashmir at international forums.
The 81st UN General Assembly opened on September 8, while its general debate is taking place from September 22 to 26.
The debate will resume on September 28 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The prime minister’s visit comes as world leaders gather for the annual high-level week amid conflicts, economic challenges and climate concerns. The session carries the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh is presiding over the 81st session.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz will participate in several high-level events on development, climate action and other international issues. He will present Pakistan’s perspective during discussions on development, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness.
