Pakistan and Iran discuss bilateral ties, mediation efforts and regional stability
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting regional peace and stability during a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, who is visiting Pakistan on an official trip.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting took place at the Prime Minister House and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Syed Tauqir Shah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and other senior officials.
Welcoming the Iranian delegation, Prime Minister Shehbaz recalled his recent visit to Tehran to attend the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. He also conveyed his best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Focus on diplomacy and regional security
During the meeting, the prime minister expressed deep concern over the recent escalation in the Gulf region and urged all parties to exercise restraint to prevent further instability.
He reiterated that Pakistan would continue serving as an “honest and sincere mediator and facilitator” while reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to supporting dialogue, diplomacy and lasting regional peace.
The discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and maintaining close engagement between the two neighbouring countries.
Iran appreciates Pakistan’s mediation efforts
Momeni thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz for the warm welcome and conveyed greetings from Iran’s leadership. He said he was leading a high-level delegation aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
The Iranian interior minister also praised the mediation efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying their engagement contributed to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Additionally, Momeni thanked the prime minister for travelling to Tehran earlier this month to attend the funeral ceremony of the late Iranian supreme leader.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations, enhancing cooperation and continuing consultations on regional developments through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
