Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Donald Trump during a reception hosted by Trump for world leaders in New York. The informal interaction took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last month.
Pakistan’s Press Information Department (PID) released photographs of the two leaders standing together, smiling and shaking hands. The White House provided the photographs. However, officials did not disclose details of their conversation.
Shehbaz Sharif and Trump Meet at UNGA
The reception brought together world leaders attending the UNGA session. The meeting came during Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to New York from September 21. He addressed the UN General Assembly on September 25.
Trump had also mentioned Shehbaz during his UNGA address. The US president described the Pakistani prime minister as a “terrific man.”
Meanwhile, Shehbaz held several bilateral meetings during the UNGA week.
He met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on September 24. Both leaders discussed regional tensions and stressed the importance of de-escalation and diplomacy.
Pakistan Continues Regional Diplomatic Efforts
The meeting with Trump came as Pakistan continued diplomatic efforts over regional tensions. Islamabad has sought dialogue and de-escalation between Washington and Tehran amid the ongoing conflict.
During his meeting with Pezeshkian, Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to support efforts for regional peace and stability.
He also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the UNGA session.
Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution of regional tensions.
Trump and Shehbaz Have Met Several Times
The latest interaction is not the first meeting between Trump and Shehbaz. The two leaders first met at the White House in September 2025. Their discussions covered regional security, counterterrorism and bilateral cooperation.
Shehbaz attended that meeting alongside then-Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Trump also discussed strengthening security and intelligence cooperation with Pakistan.
The two leaders later appeared together at several international engagements.
They also attended the Board of Peace-related meetings earlier this year.
Latest Meeting Draws Attention
The latest reception meeting has attracted attention because of the broader diplomatic context surrounding Shehbaz’s UNGA visit. Pakistan used the UNGA platform to engage with several global leaders and discuss regional and international issues.
At the same time, the government highlighted dialogue and diplomacy as key tools for addressing regional conflicts. For now, neither Washington nor Islamabad has released details of any substantive discussion between Trump and Shehbaz during the reception.
The photographs, however, confirm that the two leaders met and exchanged greetings during the New York event.
