Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The leaders discussed Pakistan-Iran relations and the evolving regional situation during their meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi attended the meeting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also joined the discussions, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Leaders Discuss Bilateral and Regional Issues
The two leaders previously met in Bishkek in August during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. During that meeting, they reaffirmed their longstanding bilateral ties and discussed regional peace and stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz had stressed the importance of restraint and continued diplomatic engagement during their earlier meeting. He also called for efforts to achieve lasting peace amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
Thursday’s meeting comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts involving Washington and Tehran. Islamabad has maintained that it remains committed to helping reduce tensions and encouraging dialogue between the two sides.
Pakistan Continues Mediation Efforts
Prime Minister Shehbaz recently said Pakistan had not abandoned its efforts to support de-escalation between Iran and the United States. He described Pakistan as a sincere mediator and said Islamabad remained focused on advancing diplomatic engagement.
The meeting with President Pezeshkian therefore carries significance amid heightened regional tensions. Both countries have continued discussions on bilateral relations while also addressing developments affecting regional stability.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Friday. His visit includes several bilateral meetings and diplomatic engagements focused on regional and global issues.
