Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates discussed expanding cooperation in public health, agriculture, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026).
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, both sides reviewed ongoing collaboration and explored new opportunities for partnership. They also discussed initiatives aimed at supporting Pakistan’s long-term development goals.
Focus on Health and Polio Eradication
Recalling the Gates Foundation team’s recent visit to Pakistan, PM Shehbaz appreciated its continued engagement in key sectors. He acknowledged the foundation’s support for polio eradication, maternal and child health, nutrition, immunisation, digitisation, and financial inclusion.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating polio completely. He thanked the Gates Foundation for its longstanding assistance and reiterated his personal dedication to achieving a polio-free Pakistan.
Bill Gates praised Pakistan’s efforts under the prime minister’s leadership. He stressed that eradicating polio remains essential for protecting future generations from the disease.
Expanding Cooperation in Agriculture and Technology
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz expressed interest in broadening cooperation in agriculture, digital innovation, and artificial intelligence. He described the Gates Foundation as a trusted partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
The prime minister also highlighted ongoing agricultural reforms focused on innovation, biotechnology, climate resilience, research, and farmer capacity-building. Both sides agreed to explore collaboration in improved seed development, livestock genetics, and emerging agricultural technologies.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships that support sustainable development and technological advancement. Officials said continued engagement would help improve social sector outcomes and create new opportunities for growth in Pakistan.
