ISLAMABAD: The new owners of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have approved several measures to strengthen the airline’s finances and expand its flight operations.
The decisions were taken during an important board meeting at PIA’s Islamabad head office, sources said.
The board approved taking two Boeing 777 aircraft on a six-month wet lease from European airline Norse Atlantic.
It also approved acquiring three additional aircraft through dry leases to support the airline’s operations.
According to sources, PIA will use the Boeing 777 aircraft for flights to Europe and the United Kingdom.
The board also directed officials to speed up the procurement of spare parts for PIA aircraft.
Meanwhile, the meeting reviewed financial, operational and other matters linked to the airline’s revival.
PIA expands London flight operations
Separately, PIA has announced a major expansion of its London operations, increasing weekly flights to seven from October 27.
According to the airline’s spokesperson, PIA will operate five weekly flights from Islamabad to London.
Additionally, two weekly flights will connect Lahore with the British capital.
PIA currently operates four weekly flights to London, meaning the expansion will provide daily connectivity between Pakistan and London.
The airline said the move reflects strong passenger confidence and rising demand for travel between Pakistan and the UK.
Moreover, the additional flights will provide more options for overseas Pakistanis and other passengers travelling between the two countries.
The expansion follows the return of London Heathrow Airport slots previously allocated to foreign airlines.
PIA said recovering those slots enabled it to increase flights on the key Pakistan-UK route.
