Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran wants Washington to return to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding before the US midterm elections.
Speaking to NBC News and other media outlets in New York, Pezeshkian said Iran did not want negotiations delayed until November. The Islamabad MOU, signed in June, established a temporary ceasefire and outlined steps toward ending the US-Iran conflict.
Pezeshkian indicated that Tehran remained open to reaching an agreement before Americans vote in the midterm elections. His remarks came two days after US President Donald Trump said he expected an agreement after the elections.
Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly accused Iran of attacks against Americans and regional neighbours. She said Trump was working to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Pezeshkian also said Iran remained open to inspections of its nuclear facilities, which Tehran maintains serve civilian purposes.
The Iranian president further denied that his government sought to assassinate Trump or his family members.
Pezeshkian said he had met Iran’s new Supreme Leader twice, including a seven-hour meeting about a month earlier.
He said he had not observed health or physical problems during those meetings.
The latest comments come as Washington and Tehran continue efforts to end their conflict and revive the June agreement.
