Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York on Wednesday to attend the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian state media reported.
Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB released footage showing Pezeshkian leaving a plane after landing at a New York airport. His visit comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to shape diplomatic discussions at the UN.
Pezeshkian Heads To UN Amid US-Iran Tensions
Analysts noted that Pezeshkian’s arrival marks the first visit by a leader whose country remains at war with the United States to American soil for a UN gathering. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with US special envoy Steve Witkoff on Tuesday.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York. According to Iranian media, Araghchi outlined Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz during the three-hour discussion.
Iran Sets Conditions For Strait Reopening
Iranian state media reported that Tehran demanded an immediate end to the US naval blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets. Furthermore, Araghchi called for an end to the war on what Iran describes as resistance fronts.
Witkoff later described the meeting positively and said another round of talks would take place soon. The discussion marked the first direct contact between senior US and Iranian officials since Vice President JD Vance met an Iranian delegation in Switzerland in June.
Iranian officials confirmed Araghchi attended the meeting and said Qatari diplomats helped facilitate the discussions. Additionally, a senior Iranian official said Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if Washington took reciprocal steps to reduce military and economic pressure.
The Strait remains a crucial route for global energy shipments. Therefore, any developments involving its reopening could have wider implications for international trade and energy markets.
