Pakistan remained at the centre of diplomatic activity at the United Nations on Tuesday as world leaders gathered for the 81st General Assembly session.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar held a series of meetings with leaders. Meanwhile, they continued efforts to promote a diplomatic solution to the US-Iran conflict, which has disrupted global trade and energy markets.
Trump Praises Shehbaz During UNGA Address
Although Shehbaz will address the UNGA on Thursday, US President Donald Trump mentioned him during his speech. Trump described Shehbaz as a “terrific man” while discussing several conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve.
Trump said the Pakistani prime minister credited him with saving 30 million lives and possibly many more. He also cited the Pakistan-India conflict, Thailand-Cambodia tensions, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and Gaza among the disputes he said he helped address.
Pakistan Pushes For US-Iran Dialogue
Pakistan has actively pursued diplomatic efforts to bring Washington and Tehran back to negotiations. However, uncertainty continued over whether Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian would meet on the sidelines of the UNGA.
Nevertheless, Trump later said his team had met an Iranian delegation during the General Assembly. He described the three-hour meeting as “very good” and said another meeting would take place soon.
According to diplomatic sources at the United Nations, Pakistan has quietly and consistently encouraged both sides to maintain indirect communication. The sources said Islamabad also urged Washington and Tehran to remain open to direct talks.
Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement comes as the US-Iran conflict continues to create uncertainty across international markets. Therefore, Islamabad is seeking dialogue while maintaining contact with global players during the UN gathering.
